What is Your Personal Development Plan ?

Do you have one?

Have you ever thought about why a personal development plan might be a good idea for you?

Some people can’t wait to finish school and ' be done ' with learning. I am just the opposite! Every September I get the urge to go back to school. My mind is hungry for more and more information. I guess you could say that I’m a perpetual student!

Learning - A Life Long Ambition

I find that the older I get, the less I really know. There is so much out there to learn. Of course when we’re in our teen years, we obviously know everything there is to know! Right ?

But somehow, age and wisdom seem to have a way of softening our view and opening our hearts and minds. When we 'stop' learning, we really do put ourselves in a box. We close ourselves off from numerous opportunities.

This is why a personal development plan can help you create a large amount of change in your life, in a relatively short period of time.

Personality Types

I have completed all of the courses with a company called Klemmer & Associates, a leadership development training company. Their workshops are experiential in nature and designed to create a significant and immediate change in the way people operate their lives.

This type of personal life coaching can impact your business, your personal life and fitness goals, finances and your intimate relationships.

One of the first things that you do at these workshops is to determine your "Personality Type". There are many different programs available to do this and they are all very similar. The one that Klemmer uses determines if you are a Controller, a Promoter, a Supporter or an Analyst.

Once you understand your dominant personality type, it is much easier to see why you react to certain situations the way that you do. And when you can look at the people in your life - your family, your spouse, your kids, your co-workers and even your boss - and say "ah, I know why he's reacting that way!" It makes life so much easier!

We have all of these traits within us - just one is usually more dominant than the others. The situation that we are in also helps to determine how we react. I am a promoter. By the definition that Klemmer uses, "promoters" are the life of the party, they have a million things going on at once, they usually have a good sense of humour, they always have a story to tell (of course!) but they have a hard time completing things. However, you can be SURE that they will tell you about that one thing out of the million things that are going on that they did complete!

Promoters having fun!

As a life coach, I've found it very valuable to be able to see what personality types people are when I am working with them on their personal development plan.

What is a Life Coach?

A Life Coach is a person who can help people identify and achieve personal and professional goals. Life coaches help clients set and reach goals using a variety of tools including an individualized personal development plan. Some examples of life coaching include:

  • Career Coaching
  • Health Coaching
  • Financial Coaching
  • Personal Relationships Coaching
  • Sports and Fitness Coaching

...and many more.

Life coaches can help you to step into your own leadership potential. In one of Brian Klemmer's books, he compares people to Carrots, Eggs & Coffee. Here is an excerpt.

Carrots are vegetables that start out firm. However, when you put a carrot in boiling water it becomes limp. Some people act like carrots. They act tough, but the challenges of life can soften them. Under the pressures of life, they will wilt. They won’t stand up for themselves any more.

An egg has a hard shell. It is soft in the middle. If you place an egg in boiling water, the inside becomes hard. Some people act like eggs. When they are faced with life's challenges they get hard on the inside. They become unable to, or unwilling to feel, and do not allow themselves to connect with, and relate to other people.

Coffee is entirely different. When you put coffee in boiling water, it changes the water completely by making it delicious to drink. Some people act like coffee. These people are leaders. When they are thrown into the challenges of life, they actually change the whole situation, making it better.

Leaders change their lives for the better...and by doing so, change the lives of those around them.

Having a personal development plan of your own can help you step into being the leader that you are - or considering yourself as a fine cup of coffee!

Brian Klemmer's work is also based on the following equation:

Your Personal Development Plan

To quote Brian Klemmer... "When the Intention is clear, the mechanism will appear".

He also teaches that there are many, many ways to achieve the same result - it doesn't have to look a certain way! I love this!

What challenges have you been experiencing in your career, family life, finances, physical health or spiritually?

Think of any of those situations as the 'boiling water' from the example above.

Stop worrying about 'the how', and having to know the exact game plan. Get very clear on what you want to achieve.

As a Life Coach and Personal Development Coach we can make a personal development plan for you. Then together, let's see how many different ways there are to getting you there!

Steps You Can Take Right Now

  1. Buy a bag of coffee and put it on your desk or somewhere you can easily see it. It will act as a trigger.
  2. Get a piece of paper and write a brief paragraph describing the biggest challenge you face in your life right now.
  3. Then, write another short paragraph on exactly how you’d like your life to be in that area right now.
  4. Finally, write a sentence that describes one specific action you will take this week, no matter how big or small it seems to you, that will start to change your life to being exactly how you would like it to be.
  5. Contact Me. Let's get started on your personal development plan now.
