Anatomy of a Colon

Looking at the picture of a healthy colon, the journey to get waste products out of your body begins on the left with the ascending colon.  Waste then travels up, where it turns a corner into the transverse colon, which runs just under your ribcage.

Then it turns another corner to enter the descending ( going down ) colon.  One more corner at the sigmoid and then hopefully we are able to empty the bowel with a bowel movement.  Quite the journey! 

Now, look at this picture of a healthy colon on the left.  Most people don't have a colon that looks like this! 

It is a known fact that most women will not "go" in public!  They also won't "go" if they are at work, if anyone is in the house or may come into the house within the next half hour!  Can you see how this behaviour can mess with our body's natural urge to purge?  You bet it does!

Over time, your colon can become toxic and impacted!  Have a look at the image to the right.  Can you see how a regular natural colon cleanse might help to keep a colon healthy?

Bowel Cleansing

Here's something to consider. Most people eat 21 meals per week.  If you have one bowel movement  (poop ) a day, you probably feel that you are regular and normal.  OK? Let's do the math.  21 meals in, 7 meals out.  Where are the other 14 meals?

Stuck somewhere in your bowel system!  Undigested food remnants, bacteria, and waste products begin to collect in the bowel.  If they are not eliminated in a timely fashion, the toxins can then be re-absorbed back into the bloodstream through the walls of the large intestine (or bowel). 

If you are holding extra food and waste in your system, do you think that getting it out could help you to lose weight? Absolutely!

70% of Your Immune System is in Your Large Intestine

Research shows that approximately 70% of our immune system is located in the large intestine or bowel.  If your bowel is all backed up, caked with old fecal matter (waste) and possibly looks like the toxic colon in the picture, above right, do you think your immune system is in top shape? Heck no!

With all kinds of viruses and bacteria in our society today, it makes sense to keep your immune system as strong and healthy as possible!

How to Cleanse Your Colon

I am often asked what I recommend for the best colon detox.  It's important to "sweep" out the old stuff in the bowel on a regular basis and that's why I've used a picture of broccoli above.  Doesn't it look like a broom?

Water, fiber and friendly bacteria are super important to good bowel health.  The recommended daily intake of fiber is 25-30g and most people consume around 10-15g. 

In addition to regular cleansing of the bowel, I believe that we should also be building a healthy body terrain at the same time.  The bowel is home to trillions of friendly bacteria.

  • Antibiotic use and other prescription drugs
  • stress
  • lack of exercise
  • poor bowel habits
  • excess alcohol consumption 

...  all contribute to an unhealthy terrain in the large intestine.

A Few Quick Ideas to
Get You Started on a Natural Colon Cleanse.....

  • increase the amount of water you drink. Try for 8 glasses/day
  • increase your fiber intake. Eat foods such as beans, legumes, brown rice, nuts, vegetables and berries with seeds or take a fiber supplement
  • take a high quality probiotic supplement which helps to  increase the ' good bacteria ' in your gut
  • do a bowel cleanse
