Fitness Tips for Women Over 40!

Fitness tips for women over 40?  Hell yes!  I'm over 40 and I am always looking for quick tips to help enhance my health!

I am a firm believer in the saying "you're only as old as you feel".  I actually have a scale that calculates your metabolic age which is kind of cool!  Guess what?  My metabolic age is 38 - and that's exactly how old I actually feel!  I have seen a number of results come back where the chronological age is 42 but the metabolic age (how old your body is based on a number of measurable factors like body fat, muscle weight, etc) is 67!  I don't know about you, but I haven't met anyone yet who wants to be OLDER than their real age!  Unless of course you're 8 and can't wait to grow up!

I have a number of fitness tips that can help you to lower your metabolic age and help you to feel...

My Top 5 Fitness Tips for Women over 40!

  • Buy yourself a fitness tracker - a popular one I like is the FitBit
  • Increase your water consumption - and yes you will have to pee more!
  • Hire a personal trainer because if you could do it on your own, you would have by now
  • start a stretching routine or join a Yoga class
  • add a quality collagen product into your supplements

Oh yes, and a bonus one.....CLEAN EATING!

1. Fitness Tracker - it helps to motivate you!

FitBit Charge

I might be a little bit of a gadget geek with this but I LOVE my FitBit!  This is like having a personal trainer wrapped around your wrist motivating you to MOVE! I recommend the Fitbit Charge because it has a display right on it that also acts as a watch.  Most fitness trackers will tell you information like how many steps you've taken, how far you've gone and how many calories burned. I also love that I can track my food, water and sleep on the FitBit.

The Fitbit syncs with your smartphone or computer to help you keep track.  The basic goal is 10,000 steps per day.  I have to tell you that on more than one occasion when I haven't quite reached my daily goal, I've walked around my house until I did reach my goal!  How's that for motivation?  Check it out!  In all my years of teaching fitness, I think this is something that works!

2. Increase Your Water Consumption

We have all read that we SHOULD be drinking more water.  Do you know that your body is made up of approximately 70% water?  Water helps keep the skin hydrated and full - read between the lines - less wrinkles for us women over 40!  It also plays a huge role in our digestion, our flexibility (dry tissue can't stretch), muscle stiffness and headaches to name a few things. It is also super important for your fascia!

How much water?  Take your body weight in pounds and divide it in half.  That's the number of ounces (oz) you should try to consume each day.  And no, coffee does not count!  That dehydrates you!  Increase your water consumption gradually and it will mean less frequent trips to the loo!

3. Hire a Personal Fitness Trainer

Really the best motivation to keep you going and help you reach your goals!  If you have an appointment that you have to keep with someone who is a certified personal fitness trainer, who motivates you, who knows the latest tips in fitness, who looks like they take care of themselves - how can you not stick to your program?  Hint:  find one that motivates and inspires you!  Don't settle for the guy who just counts your reps at the gym!  You can do that on your own!  If you're not into going to the gym, why not consider hiring an online personal trainer?  I recently added that to my line up so if you like the vibe of this website, check out my page for Online Personal Training to see if it's right for you!

4. Start a Stretching Routine

Me doing Downward Dog - flexibility for hamstrings, calves and more!

Stretching is one of the best things you can do as a human being!  Women over 40 are flocking to Yoga classes all over the globe.  A mentor of mine in the fascial stretch world once said that the key to aging gracefully is stretching EVERY DAY.  You've heard the saying "if you don't use it, you lose it"?  Flexibility is so key for health and wellness.  You all know how good you feel when you stretch but it's also one of the things that people skip when they workout.  Don't skip this piece - it's golden!  You can find all kinds of stretching on YouTube! Just find someone who you connect with.  If you don't like their voice or how they cue, then move on.  There are lots of choices out there!

I am offering an online class called LifeStretch and Fascial Flow.  You might want to check it out!

5. Add a quality Collagen supplement

This is probably one of my favourite fitness tips for women over 40! As we age, we lose our natural collagen in our bodies. Our tendons, ligaments, fascia, skin, hair and nails are all made out of collagen.  When it gets depleted, we start to deplete as well!  Fuller, healthier looking skin, strong hair and nails, great connective tissue - all of these things benefit from adding collagen into your diet.  I like to use the Nature's Sunshine Collagen powder in my shakes every morning!

Bonus!  And maybe the most important of fitness tips for women.....  CLEAN EATING!

I cannot stress enough how important nutrition is in fitness and in life!  80% of what your body looks like is a direct result of what you put in your mouth!

I hope you've found my fitness tips for women helpful and motivating!  Just get started today!  The sum of our health is made up of all of the little things.  Don't wait!  You have the power to change your life!
